The real estate market of Northwood, New Hampshire is teeming with opportunities. With Heigis Real Estate LLC at your side, this journey transforms into an exciting adventure rather than a daunting task. Discover the undeniable allure of living in this charming New England town - your dream home awaits.
Northwood grew up along the First New Hampshire Turnpike, the road built around 1800 to link Portsmouth with Concord. Today it's U.S. Route 4, and the town's four historic villages still line it: East Northwood, Northwood Ridge, Northwood Center and Northwood Narrows. About 4,600 people live here (2020 Census), and the town has a small-town feel with year-round and seasonal homes side by side.
Lakes and ponds
Water is a big part of life in Northwood. About 2 of the town's 30 square miles are water. The larger lakes and ponds include Northwood Lake, Pleasant Lake, Jenness Pond, Harvey Lake and Long Pond, which drain west toward the Suncook River, plus the Northwood end of Bow Lake, which drains east through the Isinglass River. Meadow Lake, near the center of town, sits at the headwaters of the Lamprey River. Many buyers come here for waterfront or water-access homes, from summer camps to year-round lake houses.
Schools
Northwood is part of SAU 44. Children from preschool through grade 8 attend Northwood School, and high school students attend Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, a privately endowed public academy founded in 1867. Coe-Brown is Northwood's high school of record, and the town provides transportation.
Getting around
Route 4 puts Northwood between the capital and the coast. Typical drive times are about 35 minutes to Concord, 30 minutes to Durham and UNH, 35 minutes to Dover, 45 to 50 minutes to Portsmouth, and about 50 minutes to Manchester, depending on traffic and where in town you start.
Outdoors and things to do
Northwood Meadows State Park covers 674.5 acres of woods and wetlands off Route 4, with trails for hiking, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Its pond is drawn down while the state rebuilds the dam, so check NH State Parks for current conditions. The town's high point is Saddleback Mountain at about 1,150 feet. Route 4 is also part of Antique Alley, New England's oldest antiques shopping district. New Hampshire's first group antiques shop opened here in Northwood in 1976.
Property taxes
Northwood's 2025 total property tax rate is $11.91 per $1,000 of assessed value, according to the town and the NH Department of Revenue Administration. That's the lowest rate of the six towns we serve. Your actual bill depends on your home's assessed value.
